From the Lakeshore to Your Hair
How a 13-year-old athlete's post-practice frustration became a product line.
Meet Jack Bennett
Jack is a 13-year-old entrepreneur, athlete, and problem-solver from the northern Chicago suburbs along the shores of Lake Michigan. He plays soccer, swims competitively, and spends summers on the lake โ and he got really tired of showing up everywhere with his hair looking like a disaster.
The Problem: Hair That Couldn't Keep Up
Growing up near Lake Michigan, Jack's life revolved around athletics โ morning swim practice, afternoon soccer, weekend games along the lakefront. But every time he looked in the mirror after a session, the same thing stared back: completely wrecked hair. The wind off the lake, the sweat from practice, the humidity โ no product he tried could handle all three at once. Most hairsprays left his hair stiff, flaky, or just straight-up crunchy. He asked his teammates. They had the same complaint.
The Invention: Born After a Late Practice
One evening after soccer practice โ sweaty, wind-blown, and frustrated โ Jack sat down and started reading. He studied polymer chemistry, hair care formulations, and what actually makes hairsprays work (or fail) in outdoor conditions. Over the next several months, working with a small-batch cosmetic lab, he developed the first formula: a flexible-hold, humidity-resistant spray that could survive a two-hour practice without turning into a helmet. He named it Low Tide โ a nod to the calm after the storm, and the moment the lake feels most like home.
The Brand: For Athletes, By an Athlete
Jack launched Low Tide Hairspray at age 13, starting with a single formula and a small batch sold to teammates and neighbors. Word spread fast. Today, Low Tide offers four products โ each named after something Lake Michigan teaches you: the steady power of the original hold, the force of the waves, the lightness of salt air on a calm morning, and the fury of a real lake storm. Every formula is tested in the field, by real athletes, in real conditions. No lab conditions. No shortcuts.
"I just wanted hairspray that could handle what I was putting my hair through. Turns out a lot of other people wanted the same thing."
